The Ministry of Steel, on February 5, 2024, introduced the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, superseding its 2020 predecessor, to establish a new set of regulations governing the production, certification, and distribution of steel and steel products within India. This legislative initiative underscores India's unwavering commitment to upholding the highest quality standards in the steel industry, aligning its practices with global benchmarks, and safeguarding public interests. Covering a wide array of steel and steel products detailed in Schedule 1, along with specific items outlined in Schedule 2, this Order delineates stringent standards that must be met. There is an exemption for products earmarked for export, provided they adhere to the specifications of foreign buyers, striking a balance between domestic quality assurance and international trade flexibility. This Order is designed to be adaptable to future developments, stipulating that any revisions or amendments to the specified Indian Standards will be seamlessly incorporated from their date of publication by the BIS. Effective upon publication in the Official Gazette, this Order shall apply to the steel and steel products specified herein, with the exception of domestically manufactured goods for export, which conform to alternative specifications mandated by foreign buyers.
