The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recently introduced the "Electrical Appliances for Kitchen (Quality Control) Order, 2024." This order mandates that all electrical kitchen appliances comply with the Indian Standards IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 9): 2009, which covers the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances like toasters, grills, and roasters, and IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 31): 2009, which pertains to the safety requirements for range hoods. To ensure compliance, these appliances must bear the ISI Mark, granted under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, following the guidelines set out in Scheme-1 of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Notably, the order exempts goods or articles produced domestically for export. For micro-enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the order will come into effect twelve months after its publication. For small enterprises, also defined under the same Act, the order will take effect nine months post-publication. The BIS is designated as the certifying and enforcing authority for these electrical kitchen appliances.
