The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recently released a Quality Control Order known as the "Electrical Appliance for Domestic Clothes Washing (Quality Control) Order, 2024." This directive mandates that all electrical appliances intended for domestic clothes washing must adhere to the corresponding Indian Standard IS 302 (Part 2 or Sec 7): 2010 and must prominently display the ISI Mark. To ensure compliance, manufacturers must secure a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under Scheme-1 as specified in Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. This order does not extend to goods manufactured domestically for export purposes. However, for small enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the order will become effective nine months following its publication. Similarly, for micro-enterprises falling under the same clauses of the aforementioned Act, compliance is required within twelve months of publication. The Bureau of Indian Standards will function as the certifying and enforcing body for products outlined in this order.
