In accordance with an Office Memorandum (OM) issued by the Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change on 14th November 2023, regarding compliance with EPR targets for batteries under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, certain clarifications and deadlines have been established. Compliance for EPR targets for batteries falling under 21 products listed in the Schedule of the erstwhile E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, for the fiscal year 2022-23, will be considered as part of obligations under the aforementioned rules. For batteries not covered in this category, compliance for FY 2022-23 must be met within FY 2023-24. All battery producers are hereby notified that the deadline for compliance with EPR targets and submission of annual returns for FY 2022-23 (excluding batteries as mentioned above) and FY 2023-24, as per the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, is set for 30th June 2024. Producers are mandated to file their annual returns for the specified years on the EPR portal within the stipulated timelines. Producers need to achieve their target obligations by the specified deadline. Producers are reminded to purchase EPR battery recycling credits exclusively from registered recyclers to fulfil EPR targets and avoid non-compliance with the BWM Rules, 2022.
