The Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently implemented the directive, the Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, to oversee the quality standards of copper products, which carries significant implications for various stakeholders. Enacted under the authority vested by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, it supersedes its predecessor, the Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023. This order mandates the obligatory use of the Standard Mark for designated goods, ensuring adherence to corresponding Indian Standards. Noteworthy is the inclusion of micro and small enterprises, which are also required to comply with these standards, although with a specified grace period. The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the certifying and enforcing authority under this order. Violation of the outlined provisions is subject to penalties as per the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Through its provisions and penalties, this order aims to maintain quality standards in the manufacturing and distribution of copper products, thus safeguarding consumer interests and fostering industry integrity. Unless otherwise specified, this Order shall come into effect on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
