Natural coconut coir fibers are used to make the eco-friendly and traditional Indian textile known as open weave coir bhoovastra. "Bhoovastra" means "earth cloth" in Sanskrit, and India's agricultural and cultural legacy are closely linked to this distinctive fabric. It is made by weaving coir fibers into a pattern resembling a lattice or open mesh, which produces a material that is breathable and lightweight and suitable for a variety of uses. Especially in dry or erosion-prone areas, one of the main applications of open weave coir bhoovastra is as a protective covering for soil. It helps to retain moisture, lessen soil erosion, and stimulate plant development when it is placed on top of the soil, acting as a barrier against wind and water erosion. It may also be used as a mulch to control soil temperature naturally and prevent weed development.
The Indian Standard IS 15869:2020 lays forth specifications for open-weave coir bhoovastra, a kind of geotextile composed of coir fibers. Geotextiles used in erosion control applications are legally required to adhere to these set requirements. Producers that follow these guidelines make sure their goods meet legal requirements, which lowers the possibility of legal problems and liabilities. The standard outlines a number of technical specifications pertaining to the layout, building, and functionality of open weave coir boovastra. It lessens variances in product quality by assisting firms in upholding quality control in their production operations.
Note: In order to sell open weave coir bhoovastra, manufacturers must get the mandatory ISI Mark Certification.
When it comes to verifying the efficacy, longevity, and quality of coir bhoovastra materials used in soil management, agriculture, and erosion control, ISI certification is essential. It means that these coir products have passed strict testing and meet the BIS's strict standards, which are designed to assess its weave structure, strength, and appropriateness for various uses. This certification guarantees that the coir bhoovastra materials are made and intended to efficiently fulfill their intended uses, which include stabilizing soil, preventing soil erosion, and being used in agriculture.
Indian Standards Institute, or ISI was renamed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 1987. The official mark that the Bureau of Indian Standards provides for manufacturers of various goods is the ISI Mark. It is used to indicate compliance with Indian standards (IS) set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and has been used as a conformity marking for industrial products. Manufacturers received permission from BIS to use the ISI Mark on items that comply with relevant Indian requirements through the product certification program.
Only manufacturers (domestic or foreign) who produce the finished product will be awarded ISI Certification. This will not be given to any product importers, traders, dealers, or distributors.
The following documentation is required to get an ISI certification:

There are two approaches for Indian manufacturers to become certified with the ISI Mark:
Regular Procedure
With the possible exception of cases deemed "All India first," which might take up to 180 days, the licensing procedure is expected to be finished in 120 days. This timeline starts on the day the application is received, assuming that at different points in time the documentation, unit assessment, and product conformance are all deemed acceptable.
Step 1: Manufacturing Unit Customization in Compliance with Applicable Indian Standards
Step 2: Submission of the Application Form

Simplified Procedure
This is a much faster process than the standard procedure. After a factory inspection is deemed satisfactory and the initial evaluation establishes that the sample complies with the applicable Indian Standard(s), the license application process is expected to be finished in 30 days.
Step 1: Adapting the Manufacturing Unit to Comply with the Relevant Indian Standard
Step 2: Sample Testing
