Modern technology, such as a Point-of-Use (POU) water treatment system based on reverse osmosis (RO), is intended to supply safe and clean drinking water right at the point of use, usually in homes or small-scale settings. Reverse osmosis is an advanced filtering method used by this system to eliminate pollutants, impurities, and particles from the water supply. They are a dependable option for enhancing water quality, protecting public health, and advancing convenience and sustainability due to their capacity to eliminate a variety of impurities. These systems are quite good at removing any health risks, which improves the safety of drinking water.
For producers of RO-based POU water treatment systems, IS 16240:2023 is essential. By ensuring product safety, quality, and compliance with water treatment requirements, these standards help provide customers with clean drinking water. In addition to meeting the water treatment demands of residential, commercial, and institutional clients, manufacturers that follow these guidelines may offer dependable and effective RO systems that enhance water quality and safety. Adherence to these guidelines assists producers in upholding quality assurance throughout their manufacturing procedures, diminishing discrepancies in the caliber of their output.
Note: Reverse osmosis (RO)-based Point-of-Use (POU) water treatment system manufacturers are required to get the mandatory ISI Mark Certification.
RO-based POU water treatment systems must have ISI certification since it demonstrates the system's dedication to producing clean drinking water. This certification provides comfort to producers, customers, and regulatory agencies by attesting to the dependability and efficiency of these systems in enhancing public health and purifying water. It means that these systems have been put through a rigorous testing process and have met the strict standards established by the BIS. These standards were created especially to assess the systems' longevity, effectiveness, and capacity to treat and purify drinking water.
Indian Standards Institute, or ISI was renamed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 1987. The official mark that the Bureau of Indian Standards provides for manufacturers of various goods is the ISI Mark. It is used to indicate compliance with Indian standards (IS) set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and has been used as a conformity marking for industrial products. Manufacturers received permission from BIS to use the ISI Mark on items that comply with relevant Indian requirements through the product certification program.
Only manufacturers (domestic or foreign) who produce the finished product will be awarded ISI Certification. This will not be given to any product importers, traders, dealers, or distributors.
The following documentation is required to get an ISI certification:

There are two approaches for Indian manufacturers to become certified with the ISI Mark:
Regular Procedure
With the possible exception of cases deemed "All India first," which might take up to 180 days, the licensing procedure is expected to be finished in 120 days. This timeline starts on the day the application is received, assuming that at different points in time the documentation, unit assessment, and product conformance are all deemed acceptable.
Step 1: Manufacturing Unit Customization in Compliance with Applicable Indian Standards
Step 2: Submission of the Application Form

Simplified Procedure
This is a much faster process than the standard procedure. After a factory inspection is deemed satisfactory and the initial evaluation establishes that the sample complies with the applicable Indian Standard(s), the license application process is expected to be finished in 30 days.
Step 1: Adapting the Manufacturing Unit to Comply with the Relevant Indian Standard
Step 2: Sample Testing
